The Hierarchy of H1, H2, & H3 Tags on Webpages

About H1, H2, & H3 Tags

The H1 tag (heading one) is the most prominent text on a page which allows visitors to learn what the page is about and is the most important heading on your webpage in terms of search engine optimization (SEO). Your H1 tag should contain the primary keyword or phrase that the page targets and generally there should only be one H1 tag per page to maintain a clear hierarchical structure without confusing Google’s algorithms.

Your H2 tags are considered subheadings within a page which allows you to break down content into manageable chunks/sections for smooth readability. These tags should support your H1 and cover different aspects of your title. This also helps search engines, like Google, understand the main points of your content

Your H3 tags are used for sub-sections under each of your H2 tags if needed, to further breakdown and organize the content within these subheadings. H3 tags can help detail specific points mentioned in these H2 sections and should contain secondary keywords always related to the main topic.

How to Outrank Competitors Using This Hierarchy

In the service industry, you see many companies using a whole page to list their services in one spot – this is great to keep centralized but you’re missing out on SEO doing so. A whole page dedicated to your service, if well optimized and structured with the correct hierarchy of H1, H2, and H3 tags that are filled with relevant content will outrank and outperform those who aren’t creating dedicated pages to each one of their services.

Seen far too many times, companies put an H1 tag for each of their services on their service page which confuses Google as to what the page is truly about. With only one page listing your services, you’re missing out on the opportunity to have an H1 tag for each service, giving this service on your website more authority over your competitors.

H3: <h3>YOURSUBSECTIONSHERE</h3>

This is just one of many on-page search engine optimizations (SEO) that should be used in every website to help rank top of Google organically. If you have any further questions about other on-page optimizations, contact info@mktgcity.com
